IP geolocation estimates which country, region, and city an IP address corresponds to, along with the provider (ISP), the autonomous system (ASN), and approximate coordinates shown on a map.
The data comes from databases that relate IP ranges to locations, so it is an estimate, not an exact position. It usually gets the country right and often the city, but the street or actual address cannot be obtained from an IP.

How accurate is the location?
The country is usually reliable and the city is often right, but it can be off by tens of kilometers. It never represents a postal address: it is an estimate based on how the provider assigns its IP ranges.
What is the ASN?
The autonomous system number identifies the network that announces that IP on the Internet, usually an ISP, a hosting company, or a large organization. It helps you know who owns the connectivity.
Can a VPN or proxy change the result?
Yes. If the connection goes through a VPN, a proxy, or Tor, geolocation will show the location of the exit server, not that of the real user.
Does it work with IPv6?
Yes, it supports IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, although the coverage and accuracy of IPv6 ranges may be somewhat lower depending on the database.
