How to Convert Energy Units?
A conversion factor is used to execute conversions. Converting between units can be as easy as multiplication if you know the conversion factor:
S * C = E
S is the initial value, C is the conversion factor, and E is the final value after conversion.
Multiply by the conversion value in the right column of the table below to convert any unit into joules, such as 100 kilowatt-hours.
3600000 [(J) / (kW h)] x 100 kW h = 360000000 J
Divide by the value in the right column or multiply by the reciprocal, 1/x, to convert from J into the units in the left column.
360000000 J / 3600000 [(J) / (kW · h)] = 100 kW · h
You can multiply by the factor for A to convert A into Joules and divide by the factor for B to convert out of Joules to convert between any two units in the left column, let's say from A to B. Alternately; you can calculate the required single component by dividing the A factor by the B factor.
For instance, kilowatt-hours to British Thermal Units would be multiplied by 3600000 and divided by 1055.056. Alternately, multiply 3600000/1055.056 to get 3412.141156488. To convert kW h to BTU straight, multiply by 3412.141156488.
