Average and Mean Are the Same
The measures of central tendency average and mean. They provide information about the most prevalent number in a data set or the number that most accurately sums up all the other numbers in the data set.
- Count the number of values in your data set to determine the mean.
- To select the total, add up all the values.
- Divide the total by the number.
The count is the number of values added, and the sum is the result of adding all specified numbers. For instance, the average can be determined as follows given the five numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 25:
The average is equal to 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15/5 => 3
